The Snowman The Snow Man VideoSia - Snowman [Official Video]
Is it the speaker quietly talking to himself? Is it an imagined person? Is the speaker imagining what it's like to be a thinking snow man?
The listener is nothing himself but is still able to listen, that is, still has his senses intact. Perhaps the speaker is suggesting that the listener, out there in that cold, bare landscape, is numbed and feels insignificant?
The imaginative man becomes the snow man, becomes the snow, becomes the landscape, the season? Bereft of all reason, physicality and language, he has, paradoxically, become witness to both a non-existent and existing nothing.
Wallace Stevens first had this poem published in the magazine Poetry , and it appeared in his first book, Harmonium, a real groundbreaker, in One must have a mind of winter To regard the frost and the boughs Of the pine-trees crusted with snow; And have been cold a long time To behold the junipers shagged with ice, The spruces rough in the distant glitter Of the January sun; and not to think Of any misery in the sound of the wind, In the sound of a few leaves, Which is the sound of the land Full of the same wind That is blowing in the same bare place For the listener, who listens in the snow, And, nothing himself, beholds Nothing that is not there and the nothing that is.
One must have a mind of winter To regard the frost and the boughs Of the pine-trees crusted with snow;. The first line begins with that impersonal pronoun 'One' , a substitute for 'I', which implies that this poem isn't about an individual experience but applies to anyone.
The modal verb 'must' leaves no room for ambiguity - it is necessary to have this wintry mindset to regard the frost and the boughs on the pine-trees.
To regard is to view or look at attentively, so in this first stanza the focus is on the eye as the lens through which we see nature. This is a relatively simple descriptive tercet once the idea of the mind of winter is taken on board.
And have been cold a long time To behold the junipers shagged with ice, The spruces rough in the distant glitter.
The second stanza continues with the idea that not only must one have a mind of winter but additionally one must have been cold a long time.
There's no stipulated measurement of time here, that's up to the reader. But there is a suggestion of being physically cold, of being bodily involved in that cold, windswept landscape.
And that verb behold puts a different spin on things. It occurs in the bible for instance, in Genesis and is related to revelation or heightened insight into something impressive and awesome.
Note that the trees are all evergreen, they stay in leaf all through the year, and deny the seasonal change. So in effect, winter has no essential grip on them, unlike the speaker with his wintry mind.
Of the January sun; and not to think Of any misery in the sound of the wind, In the sound of a few leaves,.
The wind makes a sound as it hits the trees and leaves and land but there can be no true experience of it if that word misery is attached.
It's as if the mind has to be emptied and that means letting go of emotional language which can distort reality. This shift from the visual regard, behold to the aural the sound of and with it the rejection of feeling is important because it signifies a withdrawal - nature is taking over - the emotional being, the human, the listener, becoming a snow man, like a figure in a painted landscape.

Gimly M Super Reviewer. Jul 23, Had some potential and had good acting but the plot was so slow and the twists got overloaded and confusion set in.
Well shot and edited and Fassbender is a great actor. Liked it somewhat not as mucha s I had Hoped. Christopher O Super Reviewer. Mar 02, Suspenseful and full of mystery, The Snowman is an atmospheric noir thriller.
Based on an international bestselling novel, the film follows a police detective who investigates a serial killer who targets women.
Simmons, the film has a pretty strong cast; though the performances are rather lackluster. And the script is kind of weak, doing a poor job at constructing the mystery and investigation.
Still, there are some intense scenes as the killer stalks his prey and crime scenes are discovered.
It may not come together very well, but The Snowman is an engaging film with a fair amount of intrigue.
Dann M Super Reviewer. Jan 24, Michael Fassbender may be of the one of the most talented and reliable actors of his generation but the same can't always be said about some of his film choices.
Assassin's Creed only added to another failed video-game adaptation and his work with Ridley Scott on Prometheus, Alien: Covenant and The Counselor also failed to impress although, I was admittedly one of the few admirers of the latter film.
My point being, though, is that he's now not quite as bankable as he once was. Over recent years, you're just as likely to catch a stinker as you are a work of quality and The Snowman doesn't do anything to remedy this issue.
Plot: Alcoholic, crime squad detective Harry Hole Michael Fassbender finds himself on the trail of an elusive serial killer who kills when the first snow of winter falls.
With the help a new recruit Rebecca Ferguson he has to compare the new case with decades old ones to connect the dots and track down the a killer that's been on the loose for some time.
Due to delays, DiCaprio walked away, Scorsese ended up as executive producer and Scott walked as well. It could've been time constraints that led to them distancing themselves or just maybe these two experienced directors seen problems ahead and made a wise choice.
There are undeniable problems and if truth be told, I fell asleep on the first viewing and went back to it again thinking that I hadn't given it my full attention and may have missed something.
I hadn't. The film is sleep-inducingly dull and lacks so much narrative drive that it's hard to keep your eyes open.
Put simply, it's a ridiculously lazy film with an insultingly lazy script. The sheer incoherence of it makes no difference whether you've slept through it or not.
It's the quality involved that makes this a surprisingly awful endeavour though; there's Fassbender, of course, and also the usually reliable J.
So what is the problem? The problem obviously stems from it being a rushed production. Apparently, Fassbender started shooting only two days after wrapping Assassin's Creed, and it shows.
You can tell. There are more plot holes here than you can shake a Harry Hole at and the narrative is so painfully slow that any snowmen getting built would've thawed out long before an investigation even got going.
It's such a shame that this really didn't come together as all the ingredients are in place and had some genuine potential.
In fact, it's astonishing how poor it is with the quality involved and it looks like any hope of a Harry Hole franchise could already be dead in the water while Michael Fassbender best be careful if he wants to retain his reputation.
To be fair, the film's problems don't particularly lie with him but he needs to seriously take stock and be bit more discerning and choose projects more worthy of his abilities.
