The five-seater offers good seating space with an ample The headroom is also good and measures The main reason for buying a station wagon over the standard hatch version of any car is simple: the wagon offers more space.

The SportWagen provides almost double the cargo space of the standard Golf; Interior storage is ample: both front and rear occupants get their own cupholder and sizeable door pockets.

The glove box can hold a good amount of personal storage, as can the central storage box. The faux-leather covered seats in the SE model are great and do a better job of imitating real leather than some much pricier cars.

All models come equipped with an all-weather rubber floor mat kit, compass, and heated mirrors. In base form, infotainment duties are taken care of via a 6.

The SE model is upgraded to an eight-inch screen with voice control and a three month SiriusXM subscription. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard.

Volkswagen's Car-Net infotainment system is simple to operate and only makes use of a few buttons to navigate the entire system.

Both screens display high quality images and the stock sound system provides acceptable audio quality.

The SportWagen scored 'Good' for all categories except the small overlap passenger side where it got an acceptable score, and in the headlight category where it managed a marginal rating.

Contributing to the VW Golf SportWagen's good reviews is all the standard pre-collision safety tech it gets, such as forward collision warning, emergency braking, blind-spot warning, and adaptive cruise control.

Parking is made easier thanks to front and rear parking sensors and parallel park assist. By pure virtue of its body design, the Golf SportWagen deserves to be labeled as a good car.

You don't see any small, affordable station wagons on the road anymore, not to mention six-speed manual, turbocharged four-wheel-drive ones. The SportWagen takes everything we love about the Golf hatchback and gives us more of it.

The exterior might seem a bit uninspired to some, but it is what lies within that makes the Golf wagon such a gem. Both engine options are good in their own right, and the ride and handling are expectantly Golf-like.

It's no sports car, but it drives with confidence, and soon makes you forget that you're in a wagon.

Interior luxuries aren't out of this world but match the car's price point. The Golf Sportwagens crashworthiness reviews are exceptional, too.

The Golf Alltrack is basically a SportWagen with delusions of offroading grandeur. Competition from the Alltrack translates to a 1.

The Alltrack has more substantial inch wheels and has an increased ride height of 6. The Alltrack is slightly heavier and uses more gas per mile, but in almost every other category the two are equally matched.

While the Subaru Outback is also classified as a station wagon, the two are quite different beasts. The Outback has a clear bias towards the SUV realm and prides itself on its rugged persona and off-road capability.

The Outback is powered by a 2. The Outback in the 2. The Outback's 8. The Outback offers a lot of the same practicalities as the SportWagen but adds more practical off-road ability, interior space and cargo capacity to its list of accomplishments.

Hence, it is the better of the two competitors, but not by much. Check out some informative Volkswagen Golf SportWagen video reviews below.

All-wheel drive is only available on the S trim, and it comes with a turbocharged 1. The front-wheel-drive S is available with either an eight-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission, while all-wheel drive comes with a choice of a six-speed manual or a six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox called DSG in Volkswagen-speak.

The SE comes only with the eight-speed automatic. Also standard are a rearview camera, a 6. Driver safety aids on the SE include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking.

These can be added to the S trim through the optional Driver Assistance package. Additional driver aids exclusive to the SE trim include adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist and automatic high beams.

The 1. A firm, confident brake pedal is reassuring, but smooth stops proved nearly impossible. The braking distance from 60 mph of feet is nearly 20 feet longer than the class average.

The steering isn't particularly sporty either, and it lacks the all-important feel that we've come to expect from sport-tuned Volkswagens.

But the lackluster tires are perhaps the biggest letdown in the SportWagen's driving dynamics — they affect everything from emergency braking to handling performance.

Overall Comfort on the Road comment: The SportWagen has sacrificed a bit of comfort in pursuit of a sporty ride, which means a bumpy and sometimes busy ride over broken surfaces.

But the car is buttoned-down at higher speeds. The firm and well-bolstered front seats feel good initially but proved to be relatively uncomfortable on a long journey.

No matter which trim level you choose, there's no option for an automatic climate control system. Road and wind noise levels are commendably low, but the climate control needs to work hard to cool the cabin and subsequently makes for a noisy drive on warm days.

Those in colder climates will appreciate the fast-acting heated seats, which are standard across all SportWagens. Overall Interior Ergonomics comment: Typical for Volkswagen, the SportWagen's interior uses a simple and attractive layout.

The infotainment screen has two chunky dials and is flanked by easy-to-push buttons. A benefit of the long, straight roofline means passengers won't have to watch their heads when getting in or out.

The tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel has excellent range, and drivers of most sizes should be able to find a comfortable driving position. With lots of windows, slim window pillars and large mirrors, blind spots are minimal.

Rear-seat legroom isn't as spacious as in other wagons or some hatchbacks, but four adults of average height can fit comfortably in the SportWagen.

Overall Cargo and Utility comment: The SportWagen's layout it is a station wagon after all lends itself to easily handle large items, especially with the rear seats folded down.

In the trunk, you get And if you fold the rear seats, you get Small-item storage isn't as impressive. There is a cubby in front of the shift lever.

However, it's not large enough to hold some of the larger phones on the market, so one or both of the cupholders will have to be sacrificed for more sizable personal items.

The door pockets are average, but their hard plastic makes for noisy storage of small items. Larger child seats might be a bit of a squeeze in the back seat.

Our tester was equipped with forward collision warning, blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control, and all worked well during our test.

Far less effective was the voice control system, which we found too time-intensive and required very specific language to execute simple commands.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, but connection issues plagued our test. And since there's no option for native navigation in the SportWagen, you'll be relying on your smartphone for directions.

The six-speaker stereo is adequate, but a lack of output means you won't be rocking out to your favorite tunes. I can drive it all day with ease and comfort, fantastic visibility, loads of cargo room, nicely-designed driver's cockpit make this an exceptional car for the money.

I like the cloth seats better than the simulated leather, as they seem to be cooler on hot days. I do miss is a built-in on-board GPS.

If you don't have a smartphone, you're in trouble. Back seat passenger space can be a little lacking, but I didn't buy this to haul around other adults.

For a small car, cargo area is massive. Nice fit and finish -- and I'm pretty picky. When you close the door, it thumps like a Mercedes, it doesn't ping like some other imports.

Fun to drive, great handling, quiet, I just can't say enough good things about this automobile. It has been bulletproof reliable, no problems.

One recall for a micro-switch was quickly and easily addressed at the first complimentary oil change visit. The hauling capacity has been impressive.

Twice I have hauled a full-size 6-foot door with no problems -- and with the rear hatch closed all the way! Driving it is still fun and sportscar-like.

I put a tow hitch on it and am able to haul around my SeaDoo pwc, front-wheel drive makes launching and retrieving from water a breeze , and occasionally I haul a utility trailer.

I do miss having a built-in c. Visibility whilst driving is great, with absolutely NO blind spots. Acceleration is also impressive.

When you put your foot down and that turbo engages, it pops off like a rocket. Great mpg 38 and generous-sized gas tank means the range on this car is longer than any car I've owned.

The cruise control works as smoothly and seamlessly as the one in my Jaguar. After getting a flat tire in middle of Atlanta traffic, I do wish that it had a full-size spare instead of those ridiculous "donut" spares.

The compact size makes parking in small spaces a breeze, and the resolution on the back-up camera is excellent.

Definitely highly recommend this fine automobile! If one is looking for an affordable sporty all wheel drive wagon the Golf is worth a test drive.

My Sportwagen is fun to drive, economical and great looking. Folks are always coming up to me with comment about how nice the car is. It is fast, comfortable, great handling and great in every way.

The Tornado Red and AllTrak drive make this a real keeper. After a long and somewhat biased search for a new car I pulled the trigger and bought a new manual tranny 4motion Sportwagen.

It's a great car with modern amenities, good road handling and the throwback manual transmission, which is the way god intended us to drive.

Write a review. See all 9 reviews. Despite its larger size, the Outback is often considered alongside the SportWagen when buyers shop for a wagon.

The Outback has more off-road ground clearance, more cargo room and more power. Its larger size and bulk make it less elegant than the SportWagen, but the Subaru's extra room and ability, for not much extra money, should put it on your consider list.

The L is slightly shorter in length than the SportWagen but actually offers more a bit more maximum cargo space, no doubt a factor of its taller roofline.

But while the L can carry more than the SportWagen, it's not as efficient with its fuel use. It gets just 25 mpg combined, compared to the VW's 31 mpg.

The L is also less enjoyable to drive and has fewer up-to-date features. Like the Outback, the TourX isn't exactly a like comparison to the SportWagen, but it's worth considering if you're set on a wagon style but can't commit to one of the larger European luxury wagons.

The TourX is, ironically, based on a European wagon and offers quite a bit more length and cargo capacity than the VW, not to mention more power and standard all-wheel drive.

It's worth a look if you want SportWagen capabilities in a larger, and pricier, package. Available styles include 1. Consumer ratings and reviews are also available for the Volkswagen Golf SportWagen and all its trim types.

We put the vehicles through rigorous testing, evaluating how they drive and comparing them in detail to their competitors. Volkswagen has added an extra foot of overall length to the SportWagen, taking the figure to Exterior dimensions for the wagon are more or less the same as the Golf hatch.

The SportWagen measures Despite the SportWagen's growth spurt, it only weighs 90 pounds more than a standard Golf for a total curb weight of between 2, and 3, pounds depending on the powertrain configuration.

There are two engine and two transmission options available for The least powerful but most fuel-efficient choice is the turbocharged 1.

This engine produces hp and lb-ft which gives it good low to mid-range pulling power at low speeds, but it runs out of breath at higher rates.

The 1. The extra power provided by the larger 1. The manuals are sweet to shift, and the dual-clutch in the 4Motion is precise and crisp.

The standard Golf hatchback is one of the best-handling and driving cars in its class, and thankfully those highly lauded road manners have translated over into the SportWagen, which does a great job of hiding its excess weight and overall length.

The wagon doesn't have the crisp turn-in of the sport-tuned GTI, but it remains composed even when pushed hard.

The standard tires and lack of steering feel don't do it any favors, but we weren't expecting the SportWagen to be a track weapon. For daily commuting, the Golf Wagon will make a perfect companion.

One of the most significant selling points of the Volkswagen SportWagen is the fact that it offers station wagon space and hatchback fuel economy.

The star of the show has to be the little turbocharged 1. Compared to the 1. The SportWagen has an estimated range of between and miles depending on engine and gearbox specification as well as city or highway driving conditions.

The interior of the Golf SportWagen is a familiar place to sit in because it's shared with the standard Golf, which means you get a well put together cabin that feels rightly premium for its price range.

The cloth seats on the base model feel rugged and should hold up to years of toddler inflicted abuse, and the faux-leather found in the SE feels surprisingly real.

Overall, the SportWagen's interior is logically laid out, looks durable, and should last as long as the car itself.
